To prevent their being duped by illegal recruiters, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) yesterday told aspiring overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) that there is no ongoing recruitment for domestic helpers in politically unstable Iran. In a travel advisory, the DFA said the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency has not received any job orders for Filipino household workers and told prospective OFWs that direct hiring is not allowed by the Philippine labor agency. The advisory was issued by the department in view of recent reports from the Philippine Embassy in Tehran of Filipino women who are stranded and facing cases of illegal employment in Iran. "Filipinos are being victimized by Iranian employers or unscrupulous recruiting agents promising employment in Iran as foreign household service workers. The Filipino victims enter Iran via Dubai using tourist visas believing that their work permits will be processed upon their arrival in Iran," the DFA said. Since the Iranian government does not allow foreign domestic helpers, it does not issue permits for such so Filipinos who insist on seeking for such jobs there will only end up as illegal workers there, the agency warned. --Michaela P. del Callar, Daily Tribune |
